A Frightening Experience
Class11 Grade7 李惠涵
I was alone at home on one dark night, reading a thrilling novel. The story was described so vividly that I could imagine what was happening right now. I’d been reading it for an hour and it was time to have a break. When I was about to stand up and stroll up to the kitchen, a clicking sound caught up my ears. The sound was so tiny that only could be heard when it was absolutely quiet. And now, it is absolutely quiet. What could it have been? I don’t know. Perspirations began to penetrate from my forehead.
‘I have to find out where the vexing noise comes from’, I said to myself, although with a little bit of fear. Perhaps it came from the clock, I thought, so I stared at every clock in the house. Everything was all right with them. What about all the sink tabs? Well, they were all right, too. Then where did it come from? A chilling fear crept over me. It must be something unlucky. Maybe it is……‘Oh, stop scaring yourself!’ I said to myself. ‘It would be OK, now sit down and continue your work, just forget about it.’
However, it seemed useless to think over other things. The clicking sound made my hair on the back of my neck prickled. My face was beaded with sweat, and my gut tightened and stomach acid driven by fear heaved up my throat. I stood there with my teeth chattering, my hand trembling, didn’t know what to do. Finally, I determined to go into the bedroom to see if there was any clue. But the cold feeling of fear was still around me, and I was afraid to go there alone. Suddenly, a snicking sound brought my terror back again. Then for the first time the horror of my situation came in its full force. I felt my heart beating so quickly as if they would crack. I was too frightened to say a word, when a sudden flash of sharp green light pierced the dreadful dark. I scooted back from the bedroom door, clutching the bolt, and stood shivering from head to foot. What is that? That must be someone prising the window. Oh, no！Somebody is about to step in my room and I have nothing to do! I am going to be robbed and……I waited for the results in a state of some trepidation. I determined not to do anything. But just at an instant, the green light disappeared just as fast as it had come, and the snicking sound disappeared with it as well!
I can’t stand any more of this! Tears trickled down my cheek and I ran to the telephone. At that moment, the wickedest thing in the world happened. As soon as I lifted the phone up, the clicking sound was over! For God’s sake! The most annoying sound was made by the phone because it wasn’t put in the right place! My breath was almost taken away that time. I burst into laughter. When all things relapsed into absolutely quiet again, I heard someone shouting on the street, ‘Wow! The eyes of that cat are so bright! It’s like the brightest green!’ I laughed again.
